It’s NOT the “Blue Light Special” From Back in the Day

Back in the day, a certain department store used the marketing phrase, “Attention shoppers — there’s a BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL for the next 15 minutes in aisle four”! That announcement created excitement over an opportunity to get a really good deal. These days, when “blue light” is mentioned, the emotional response is totally different.

 

Blue light now means the High Energy Visible Radiation (HEV) emitted by sunlight, and every electronic device we use daily.

 

Forgive me briefly, while I get a little technical…on the full light spectrum, blue light contains the most damaging wave lengths of 415–455 nanometers. Recent research shows that peak HEV damage occurs in the blue-violet portion at 440 nanometers.

 

72% of adults are unaware of the potential dangers of blue light to the eyes! One in four children (like my seven year old son) are using HEV emitting electronic devices for more than three hours per day, which can increase their risk of early-onset age related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal issues. Between online school assignments and online games, our kids are exposed to a boat-load of blue light every day.

 

At Legacy Eyecare, we totally agree with Gary Morgan O.D. of Eye Tech Associates in Peoria, AZ who states,

 

“All kids, regardless of refractive status, should wear blue light filtering spectacle lens products when viewing digital devices. If you had a child in a wood shop, wouldn’t you require they wear safety glasses? Blue light filtering lenses are the 21st century safety glasses.”

 

For indoor blue light radiation exposure from PCs, smartphones, laptops, tablets, televisions, etc. I prescribe treatments for clear lenses which are specifically designed to absorb only the harmful wave lengths of blue light.

 

For my patients who spend long hours in direct sunlight, for work and/or pleasure, I prescribe brands of sunglasses which include lens protection from the damaging wave lengths of blue light.

 

Ask your eye doctor to prescribe an effective way to prevent eye damage from both indoor and outdoor over-exposure to blue light. And make sure to avoid products claiming to block all Blue Light, because the human body needs the non-harmful wave lengths of blue light to regulate sleep cycles.
